Each rust and indigo art quilt I create involves several processes. The process starts with white cotton or cotton/silk blend fabric. I will sometimes dye the fabric in an indigo vat and then the fabric is then impregnated with rust by wrapping or layering with rusted objects. With time, moisture and heat, the rust is transferred to the fabric leaving a natural organic pattern.
The appeal of this process is its unpredictable nature. Parts of the process can be controlled, but mostly it is left up to Mother Nature as to the final outcome.
