How to Use a Flexible Cutting Mat as a Paint Palette: A Creative Hack for Artists
As an artist, finding versatile and cost-effective tools in your studio is always a win. Did you know that a simple flexible cutting mat can double as a perfect paint palette? In this blog post, I’ll show you how I creatively use a flexible cutting mat from the Dollar Tree as a paint palette. This hack has become one of my go-to solutions in the studio, and I’m excited to share it with you!
Why a Flexible Cutting Mat?
Traditional paint palettes are great, but if you’re not a regular painter, you might not have one lying around. Instead of purchasing a new one, I discovered that flexible cutting mats are a perfect substitute. These mats are lightweight, easy to store, and extremely cost-effective—you can find them at the Dollar Tree, where two come in a pack for just $1.25. Their smooth, non-porous surface is ideal for mixing and rolling out paint, making them a practical and affordable option for any artist.
Perfect for Mixing and Rolling Paint
The flexible surface of these cutting mats is perfect for mixing paint or rolling it out, which is especially useful for stamping projects. Simply squeeze out a small amount of paint, use a palette knife or brayer to mix and spread it, and you’re ready to go! The smooth surface makes it easy to achieve the desired consistency, and the flexibility of the mat allows for effortless application of paint to stamps or other surfaces.
Easy Cleanup
One of the biggest advantages of using a flexible cutting mat as a paint palette is the easy cleanup. After you’re done, you can simply wipe down the mat with a clean cloth. For a more creative approach, I like to press cleanup papers onto the wet paint left on the mat, allowing them to absorb the excess. Once dried, these papers can be peeled off, revealing interesting textures and colors that can be used in future projects. Any remaining paint can be spritzed with water and wiped away with a damp rag—quick, simple, and mess-free.
Space-Saving and Practical
Another reason I love this hack is the space-saving aspect. These mats are so thin that they can be stored in the smallest of spaces, making them perfect for artists with limited studio space. You can easily keep multiple mats on hand, ready to use whenever inspiration strikes. Their practicality and versatility make them an invaluable tool in any artist’s toolkit.
